My latest mixed media piece, “Too Much? Too Bad,” is a modern take on Richard Sargent’s Doggy Buffet from The Saturday Evening Post (January 5, 1957). Sargent’s original captured humor and excess, while my interpretation layers nostalgic imagery, pop culture icons, and whimsical details.
I blend past and present, drawing from Sargent’s playful extravagance while adding my own twist. My recurring duo, Marilyn Monroe (wearing a necklace with the word love) and of course King Kong, along with the motif of love weaved through the piece, bring a surreal charm and contemporary relevance. A party-like energy emerges—because who doesn’t love ice cream, cupcakes, and macaroons?
More than a visual piece, “Too Much? Too Bad” tells a story of empowerment—a playful take on abundance, extravagance, and unapologetic joy. It’s my way of saying that sometimes, the best response to chaos is to embrace it fully, no matter what others might think of your decision to stand-out rather than blend-in with the crowd. I hope you enjoy!
